(서울=연합뉴스) 김동찬 기자 = 10일 끝난 윔블던 테니스 대회 남자 단식에서 노바크 조코비치(세르비아)가 우승하면서 윔블던 남자 단식의 '빅4 독점 체제'가 20년째 이어졌다.

남자 테니스의 '빅4'는 조코비치, 라파엘 나달(스페인), 로저 페더러(스위스), 앤디 머리(영국) 네 명을 일컫는다.

이들은 2000년대부터 최근까지 세계 남자 테니스계 강자로 군림하는 선수들이다.

올해 2월 다닐 메드베데프(러시아)가 남자 단식 세계 1위에 오르면서 2004년 2월 앤디 로딕(미국) 이후 18년 만에 '빅4' 이외의 세계 1위가 됐을 정도로 '빅4'의 장기 집권이 계속됐다.

4대 메이저 대회에서도 '빅4'가 우승컵을 나눠 가졌는데, 2004년 윔블던부터 올해 윔블던까지 총 72회 메이저 대회(호주오픈·프랑스오픈·윔블던·US오픈) 가운데 '빅4'가 아닌 선수가 우승한 적은 7번에 불과하다.

특히 유일한 잔디코트 메이저 대회인 윔블던은 '빅4' 독점이 가장 심했다.

2002년 레이튼 휴잇(호주)이 정상에 오른 이후 올해까지 20년간 '빅4'가 아닌 선수가 윔블던 남자 단식 우승을 차지한 적이 없다.

20년 사이에 페더러가 8번, 조코비치가 7번 우승했고, 나달과 머리는 두 차례씩 윔블던 우승컵을 품에 안았다.

호주오픈은 2014년 스탄 바브링카(스위스)가 우승한 이후 올해까지 8년 연속 '빅4'만 우승했고, 프랑스오픈은 역시 2015년 바브링카 이후 올해까지 7년 연속 조코비치와 나달이 우승을 나눠 가졌다.

US오픈만 2020년 도미니크 팀(오스트리아), 지난해 메드베데프가 연달아 정상에 오르며 '빅4'의 아성이 흔들렸다.

메이저 대회 남자 단식 최다 우승 경쟁은 이번 대회 결과로 더욱 뜨거워졌다.

나달이 22회로 가장 많고, 조코비치가 21회, 페더러는 20회씩 우승했다.

올해 남은 메이저 대회는 8월 말 개막하는 US오픈인데 이 대회에는 나달, 조코비치, 페더러의 출전이 모두 불투명하다.

윔블던 4강에서 복근 부상으로 기권한 나달은 몸 상태 회복 여부가 변수고, 조코비치는 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 백신을 맞지 않아 현재 규정대로면 미국에 입국할 수 없다.

무릎 부상 중인 페더러 역시 빨라야 올해 9월에나 경기에 나설 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.

1981년생 페더러가 이 경쟁에서 이길 가능성은 희박하고, 1986년생 나달과 나달보다 1살 어린 조코비치가 메이저 최다 우승 기록을 놓고 다투는 모양새다.

남자프로테니스(ATP) 투어는 11일 조코비치와 나달, 페더러의 주요 타이틀 현황을 비교했다.

시즌 왕중왕전 성격의 ATP 파이널스에서는 페더러가 6회, 조코비치가 5회 우승했고, 나달은 한 번도 정상에 오르지 못했다. 나달은 이 세 명 가운데 유일하게 올림픽 단식 금메달이 있다.

또 메이저 다음 등급인 ATP 1000시리즈 대회에서는 조코비치가 38회, 나달 36회 우승했고 페더러는 28회 우승 기록이 있다.

메이저(올림픽 포함), ATP 파이널스, ATP 1000시리즈 우승 횟수를 더하면 조코비치가 64회로 가장 많다. 나달(59회)과 페더러(54회)가 뒤를 쫓고 있다.

이 세 명 다음으로는 피트 샘프러스(미국)가 30회로 차이가 크게 난다.
