쓰임 다한 고물 밴… 절망에 빠진 청년 인생에 새 시동 걸었다

남편 리는 수년간 1976년식 고물 박스형 밴을 몰았다. 그가 전기 작업이나 냉각기기를 작업할 때 사용하던 차다. 남편의 사장이 그에게 새 회사 트럭을 주면서, 그 황갈색 밴은 우리 가족용 차가 되었다.

밴은 앞 좌석이 두 개나 있어서 중간 자리에 아이스박스를 두었다. 차 내부는 메탈에 뒷자리 바닥은 나무였다. 에어컨은 없고 히터만 있었다. 그러나 시동은 여지없이 잘 걸렸다.

트렁크는 열 때마다 삐걱거렸고, 옆문은 녹슬어 있었다.

그래도 잘 작동하는 카세트 재생기에 여기서 저기까지 잘 데려다 주었다. 딸 베서니가 운전면허를 땄을 때, 아이는 친구들이 모는 그런 휠이 멋진 차를 원했다. 우리는 그 밴을 딸에게 물려주었다. 아이는 눈에 띄지 않으려고 뒷길로 다녔고, 누군가 제발 그 차를 훔쳐가길 바라며 열쇠를 꽂아 둔 채 내렸다.

베서니는 툴툴댔지만, 친구들은 그 오래된 황갈색 밴을 재밌어 하는 것 같았다. 심지어 어떤 아이는 그 옆에 서서 사진까지 찍었다. 베서니가 대학에 들어가면서 우리는 그 충실한 밴에게 작별을 고할 때가 왔음을 알았다.

그 밴은 수천억 마일이나 달렸기에 팔 수도 없었다. 그럼에도 항상 시동은 잘 걸렸다. 어디 그 차를 탈 사람이 없을까? 그때 바로 우리 부부와 친한 하이디의 아들 크리스가 떠올랐다. 크리스는 법을 어겨 감옥에 갔다. 우리 모두 그를 위해 기도했다. 그는 곧 출소할 예정이었다. 우리 밴이 그가 직업을 구하고 자립하는 데 도움이 될지도 몰랐다.

나는 하이디에게 전화를 걸어 크리스에게 밴을 줘도 될지 물어보았다. 하이디는 기꺼이 우리 마음을 받아주었다. 몇 년이 흘렀다. 하이디와 내가 마침내 못다 한 이야기를 나누게 되었다.

"크리스는 잘 지내?" 내가 물었다.

"안 그래도 얼마 전에 크리스가 네 얘기를 했어." 그가 말했다.

"있잖아. 범법을 저지른 후에 크리스는 자기 인생이 끝났다고 생각했대. 하나님께서 자기를 쓰실 곳이 있을까 의심했고. 그런데 너하고 리가 밴을 주었을 때, 그것이 바로 하나님께서 여전히 자기를 사랑하고 잊지 않으셨으며 혼자 자립할 수 있는 표징이라는 걸 알았대."

크리스는 이제 결혼하여 아이가 둘이고, 최근에는 사업을 시작했다. 누군가의 낡고 오래된 밴이 또 다른 누군가의 새로운 시작이 될 줄 누가 알았겠는가?
A New Start

For years my husband, Lee, drove an old, beat-up ‘76 box van that he used for his electrical and refrigeration work. When his employer supplied him a new company truck, the tan van became part of our family. There were two seats in front, and we put an ice chest between them for a third. The interior was raw metal with wooden slats on the floor in back. No AC-only a heater. But the van always started.

　The back door creaked when you opened it, and there was rust on the side door panels. But it had a working cassette player and got us from point A to point B. When our daughter, Bethany, got her driver's license, she hoped for some cool wheels like her friends drove. We bequeathed her the van. She drove the back roads so as not to be seen and left her keys in the ignition, in the hopes that someone would steal it.

　Bethany might have grumbled, but her friends seemed to get a kick out of the old tan van, some even taking photos of themselves standing next to it. When Bethany went off to college, we figured the time had come to say farewell to the trusty vehicle.

　We couldn't really sell the van-it had a zillion miles on it. On the other hand, it always started. Wasn't there someone who could use it? That’s when we thought of our friend Heidi's son Chris. As a young adult, he'd strayed into trouble and ended up doing time in jail. We'd all been praying for him. Now he was being released. Maybe the van would help him look for a job and get back on his feet.

　I called Heidi and asked if we could give the van to Chris. She was happy to accept. A few years passed. Heidi and I finally had time to catch up.

　"How’s Chris doing?" I asked.

　"He just mentioned you the other day," she said. "You know, after being in trouble with the law, he felt as if his life was over. He wondered if God had any use for him. But when you and Lee gave him that van, he knew it was a sign that God still loved him and hadn't forgotten him and that he could get back on his feet."
　Chris is now married with two children and recently started his own business. Who knew one person’s rusty old van could be another's new start?
